Pocket Knife Laws by State
There are many types of knives, some we know as daggers, some dirks, etc. There is indeed a wide variety, brands, and models to choose from. But the thing which binds us is the State Laws for the knife. You would not want to fall among any problems by chance, so you must thoroughly read about the state knife laws, especially the one you are staying in.
If you want to buy a knife, then make sure you are not violating any state laws. However, in general, if we see, knives are allowed as long as you do not intend to harm someone, and if your criminal record is clean, you have nothing to worry about.
In other cases, pocket knives are legal in many states. The most common legal blade length you will come across is about 3″ inches. This is the type of blade length you can keep in many cases. Some of the states which allow you to conceal carry are;
Maine, Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. However; this is for pocket knives and not the dangerous ones, as pocket knives are not considered dangerous weapons, they cannot do as much harm as some full blade length knife, such as 5″ or 6″ inches blade length knife, they are considered as tools rather than dangerous weapons.
But this is not the case with every State; you might want to look deeper into the different laws, blade length, and other characteristics, as there are some states which do not allow blade length more than 2.5″ inches too. In Delaware, you may carry a concealed knife, but the blade length should not exceed more than 3″ inches while Colorado allows the concealed knife with the blade length of 3.5″ inches. So, even the slightest difference may get you into trouble if you are not quite keen on it. You must always respect the area and its laws.
Generally, you never want to visit any public places with knives. Especially I am talking about schools. This is the most sensitive area, and also, most knife laws are imposed on it. You cannot carry your knife on the school premises. However, just like some states have different laws, some might allow you to carry a knife in school, such as Idaho. It allows you to carry the knife, provided that the knife is not very dangerous, it must be a pocket knife, and the blade length should not exceed more than 2.5″ inches. Also, if you have had a previous criminal record, then you cannot keep a knife.
The knife law also gives benefits to the people who like to travel. Now When many States share the knife laws, you can feel free to travel through those States without having any problem. This is the reason we encourage you to always make a plan and read the law before you move with your EDC knife.
